The First Day Of Admission
2nd January 2014
Thursday
Penang Pantai Hospital
Penang Pantai Hospital
Woke up a bit late as these few days were extremely tiring days for us. Requested abang to send our daughter to school as I need to pack a lot of stuff for our planned 'journey' today : Penang Pantai Hospital.
Around 10.45am,we pushed off to Penang and arrived at our destination at about 12.00pm. Alhamdulillah managed to meet Dr Kan Choon Hong the neurosurgeon. A nice.young guy with smiles on his face welcomed us through his widely opened door.
And the discussion started with him looking through the mri scan and the referral letter from our dear Dr Lim Paik Gan(the orthopedic surgeon from SP Pantai Hospital). And the history started all over again but with minor explanation as he has been briefed by Dr Lim earlier.
After going through the mri scan,Dr Kan stated that there is something on the left side of my hubby's nerve. Even though he is the specialist in his area,he dares not confirm what it is. It may be a lipoma, granuloma or hematoma. Wowwww! All are big and alien terms for both of us. As I confessed to both doctors,we are not in medical field but in education but we will by all means search and learn new things as time goes by.
He requested for a break to discuss with his collegue,Dr Soon ,the radiologist to have a better view and opinon on the case which for him is a very rare case. I have some sense that he is more concern on the assasive blood vessels around my hubby' nerve. And to carry on with the open surgery is a bit risky as the blood vessels might be accidently cut in the middle of the procedure.
Another easy option is to proceed with the earlier suggestion from that 'so-called' specialist from Putrajaya Hospital which is to carry on with the Epidural Steroid Injection. But for Dr Kan,he is not so keen in doing that yet, no matter how easy it is as he is more to find the cause of my hubby's pain and not just to kill the pain. Furthermore the scan was not very clear (he said my hubby might have moved a bit during the process),so he advised to redo the mri test for clearer views. Than he will conduct biopsy test so that some tissues can be extracted for further examination.
So we waited for the guarantee letter to be approved by the insurance company. The procedure was delayed as the company quieried why the mri test has to be redo in 3 days time.Dr Kan gave his reasons and here we are,at7.01pm......still waiting for my dear beloved hubby to be admitted into his room. Poor soul,he has to suffer in pain.....but Insyallah,Allah will ease his pain.
After such a long waiting period,we were urshed to his room 316. Alhamdulillah, I thanked Allah for making things run smoothly even after the long waiting and a lot of back pain . Insyaallah, tomorrow Dr Kan will proceed with the mri test and further discussion will occur whether to continue with biopsy or other treatment.
It is already 12.00am and I am still jotting down our experience today.Nothing much, just something to share with and something for me to remember for life- Insyaallah.
Well,it's time to say goodnight......so good night everybody, good night world. My dearest one is already in his own world......good night my love. I love you more than any word can describe.

Dr Andrew was on leave and Dr Lim took over his task to treat my hubby. And this was when everything changed for better. Alhamdulillah, Allah has mercy on us and forever there to help the needy. Dr Lim spotted something is not right somewhere when she relooked at the mri scan.(After we insisted her to carry out the mri scanning once again as the previous one was done in March- over 9 months ago).
She spotted that there is something pressing my hubby's nerve which causes the severe pain. It is either fat, tumor or cancer! She advised to redo the mri to check whether there are any differences in the scan result and upon our agreement and consent, she placed a booking for the mri room.
At 3.30pm,the mri test was once again done and we discussed the result at 8.00pm.She then suggested we go to Penang Pantai Hospital to get a specialist advice - Dr Kan. We agreed and that night itself we requested to be discharged from the ward, stating that we will proceed with the next move ourselves.

Only Allah Knows Best For Everyone......
26th December 2013
Thursday
Thursday
The Everly Hotel, Putrajaya.
At 6am I woke up and greeted good morning to the day. Hubby was still fast asleep but the need to wake him to face the challenge of the day forced me to gently kissed his forehead in order to activate his mind to the world.
Leaving the girls under Angah's custody, after thorough and in-depth instruction on what to do for the rest of the day,we left for Putrajaya Hospital. After step by step of procedure for registration and admission, finally my hubby was admitted at the day-care centre.
Hours by hours passed without any notice of his turn to undergo the procedure and we waited patiently, especially my dear husband. As he has to fast from midnight, I also did not have the appetite to swallow anything down my throat. Eventhough he insisted that I go and eat something,I gently declined.
At 2.15pm, suddenly a young malay doctor came and apologized, saying that the procedure has to be postponed to another date as the II mechine stop functioning. The other mechine was being used by another patient and there's no way my hubby can use it on that particular day since it was already 2.15pm. He kept on apologizing and promised to set another date for my hubby. I requested for the following day but he said the day-care center only operates on Thursdays and the next coming 2 Thursdays are fully-booked.
Goshhh !! Such dishearthening news after fasting for 14 hours and waiting for 7 hours! Allah was really testing our patience and faith again- Alhamdulilillah and I could see how patient my hubby was. The next hour was to wait for the medical certificate to be released by the doctor. And again........our patience were put into test.
Allahu Akhbar but I felt very thankful, the hours spent accompanying my beloved one is unmeasureably precious. We shared a lot of old memories and dug into old stories. Feel closer to him,Ya Allah. Thank you Ya Allah for the moments given to us!
We went back to the hotel, rested for 2 hours and then took our kids for dinner. Next,"ronda" time so we stopped at the landmark of Putrajaya - the bridge and snapped lots and lots of photos.
Reached back to the hotel at night time and we can only visualize the pillows, beds and bedsheets before the eyes closed for the day.
Journey By Bus

Ukir Building to Putrajaya
Wednesday
Ukir Building to Putrajaya
Set our mind for the journey by Maraliner to Kuala Lumpur. Aims in mind - to keep my hubby company for his Epidural Steroid Injection which is due tomorrow (26/12/20013) at Putrajaya Hospital. We arrived at the bus station around 9am as the departure was supposed to be at 10.15am but Allah is the only one knows what he planned ahead for us - the journey was delayed for 3 hours as the bus broke down somewhere on its way to the venue, so we waited at the Ukir Building patiently. To cut the story short, we boarded the bus at 12.30am and arrived at Puduraya at 5pm,took the lrt and erl to Putrajaya Central with my two heroes : along and angah who joined us half the way. After dinner, we checked in at Everly Hotel which is nearby the hospital. Then send along back to his rental house as he has lecture the next day and wouldn't be able to stay the night with us.
The night passed by slowly, waiting the light to appear for a new day ahead.
Good night everybody,goodnight love.

Fruit Trees Go Native
In this undated photo, Clove currant’s spring show of deliciously fragrant flowers.More and more gardens are going native these days. Butterfly weeds are edging out delphiniums, clethra is hobnobbing with flowering dogwood, and sunflower is strutting like a prima donna.
Fruit plantings, though, are stalled in the past, with many people still planting apples, peaches or pears — all non-natives.
Yet native fruits are worth planting even if they are less familiar. Many are highly resistant to pests, which is more than can be said for apples, peaches and the like. In addition to distinctive and delectable flavors, some native fruits also are borne on handsome plants that can mingle in the landscape with other ornamentals.
Let's foray out into the American wilderness and look at a sampling of such delectables (also covered in my book "Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden," Timber Press, 2008).
Why not start with trees, with American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)? This native lives up to its botanical name, meaning "food of the gods," only if you choose one known to bear tasty fruits and can ripen them within your growing season. The best are something like a dried apricot that's been soaked in water, dipped in honey and then given a dash of spice.
In the northernmost growing regions (into USDA Zone 4) or in coastal areas where summers stay cool, good choices are Szukis, Mohler, Yates and Dooley. In hot-summer areas and further south, choose from a slew of good varieties, including Early Golden, John Rick and Garretson. None of these varieties need another tree for cross-pollination, and all are draped throughout summer in languorous, slightly bluish leaves that, in autumn, turn a rich, golden yellow. With some varieties, the orange fruits cling to branches long after leaves drop, decorating the bare limbs like Christmas ornaments.
Mulberry (Morus rubra) is a native that perhaps would be more loved if it were more difficult to grow. (We also have non-native mulberries, and their hybrids with our natives — all delicious.)
This familiar fruit resembles a blackberry in shape, but ranges in color from deep black to red to lavender to pure white. Fruits on wild trees usually are cloying, appealing mostly to children. Illinois Everbearing and Oscar are among the best varieties — to adults — for their refreshing dash of tartness.
Mulberry leafs out late and fall color is inconsequential, so it is in summer that the tree comes into its own as an ornamental. Some weeping forms also bear fruit.
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a native tree with tropical aspirations. With large, drooping, lush leaves that resemble those of avocado, this is not the sort of plant you would expect to find in woodlands of the eastern U.S. It does have botanical connections with the tropics, being the northernmost member of the Custard Apple family, which includes such delicacies as the cherimoya and soursop.
Pawpaw sheds some of its tropical airs in the fall, when its leaves turn a clear yellow. The fruits, though, carry on the tropical theme. They are the size and shape of mangos and ripen in clusters like bananas. Inside, the fruit is creamy and tastes much like banana, with hints of pineapple, avocado, vanilla and mango.
Plant two different varieties for cross-pollination (and fruit from each).
Juneberry (Amerlanchier spp.), also known as serviceberry or shadblow, is a native tree more often planted as an ornamental than for its fruit. Early spring brings clouds of white or reddish blossoms; fall ignites the leaves in purples, oranges, and yellows; and the plants continue to earn their keep through winter with neat form and striped, gray bark.
The fruits look like blueberries but have a unique flavor that is sweet and juicy, with the richness of sweet cherries and a hint of almond.
If you are looking for a native, fruiting bush rather than a tree, you might again turn to juneberry. Bushy juneberries have the same qualities as the trees do, except that they are more multi-stemmed and shrubby.
And speaking of fruits that look like blueberries, let's segue over to the real thing. Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum and V. asheii) would undoubtedly be planted as ornamentals if they were not so valued for their fruits. Clusters of blossoms dangle from the stems like dainty, white bells in spring, and the leaves turn a fiery red in autumn. Even in winter, blueberry's red stems add welcome color to the landscape, especially against a snowy backdrop.
The secret to success with blueberries is a soil low in fertility, rich in humus and very acidic.
A blueberry relative also ideal as a native fruit is lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea). This half-foot-high plant sports evergreen leaves as lustrous as those of holly and as dainty as mouse ears.
In spring and again in summer, flowers dangle from lingonberry stems like rosy white urns. Lingonberry requires the same soil conditions as blueberry, and in fact grows well in a bed with lowbush blueberry (V. angustifolium).
Both spread to create an edible groundcover; they are as happy together in a garden bed as their fruits are in a jar of jam.
Perhaps the star performer among native plants offering beauty and good flavor is a relatively unknown currant, the clove currant (Ribes odoratum). At the turn of the 19th century, it was a common dooryard shrub whose large, yellow flowers would waft spicy fragrance indoors.
Clove currant is a tough plant, able to laugh off drought, heat and cold, as well as insects and diseases, deer and birds. The shiny, blue-black berries are aromatic, fairly large and have a sweet-tart flavour.

EPF declares biggest dividend payout of RM31.20 billion for 2013
The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a dividend rate of 6.35% for the financial year ending December 31, 2013, an increase of 0.20% from the previous year, making it the biggest ever payout to its members, the pension fund announced today.
A total RM31.20 billion dividend payout will be made, up 13.66% over the RM27.45 billion for 2012 declared last year.
EPF chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman attributed the increase to the fund's prudent investment strategies and improving performance in the past five years.
"Over the years, we have been diversifying our portfolio, thereby spreading out the scope of our assets to manage market risks and generate consistent returns," he said in a statement today.
“Our achievements reflected the effectiveness of a balanced and diversified fund. 2013 was a very good year for our equity investments while the year before that showed us faring better in the fixed income portfolios. By having a diversified portfolio across many markets, we are able to take opportunities when they arise and reduce the overall risk to the fund.
"However, we remain cautious for the coming year as volatility in interest rates may possibly affect our returns, given that EPF funds are predominantly invested in low risk fixed income instruments. Additionally, we anticipate substantial volatility in emerging markets as liquidity tightens globally,” added Samsudin.
The 2013 dividend can be viewed on the EPF’s Facebook page or on its Twitter account, KWSPBuzz as well on YouTube.
